Franchise - A franchise is an intellectual property for which several derivative works have been produced from an original work such as a movie.
Distributor - A person who is responsible for the marketing of a film.
Hollywood Major - Major film studios are production and distribution companies that release a substantial number of films annually and consistently command a significant share of box office revenue in a given market.
Teaser - A poster or trailer that initiates interest in a film with very small details.
Montage - A collection of different images combined in one image.
Ensemble Cast - A group of actors who more or less have equal roles in a production - There is not always a main protagonist.
Tentpole Film - A very high-budget film which is expected to be very successful in order to support smaller, riskier productions.
High-Concept - Emphasis on a striking but easily communicable central idea, designed to have wide audience appeal.
Enigma - A question that encourages an audience to watch/read on to find the answer to.
1 - The Big 5 major Hollywood studios are:
Universal Pictures - Paramount Pictures - Warner Bros - Walt Disney Studios - Sony Pictures
2 - The main aim of a film marketing campaign is to generate excitement, give a little bit away, and excite and entice audiences to actually watch your film.
3 - Marketing Techniques: Trailer - Influencers - Target Audience - Posters - Teasers
4 - Film Posters Should Include: Genre - Narrative - Characters
5 - A teaser poster will have "Coming Soon" where as Theatrical Poster's will have a specific date.
HomeWork:
- The idea of James Bond was inspired by the novel written by Ian Flemming, The British secret Agent Service.
- Dr No - From Russia With Love - Goldfinger - Thunderball - You Only Live Twice - On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Diamonds Are Forever - Live And Let Die - The Man With The Golden Gun - The Spy Who Loved Me - Moonraker - For Your Eyes Only - Octopussy - A View To A Kill - The Living Daylights - License To Kill - GoldenEye - Tomorrow Never Dies - The World Is Not Enough - Die Another Day - Casino Royale - Quantum Of Solace - Skyfall - Spectre - No Time To Die. This is the entire film timeline.
- James Bond is the ultimate main character made evident as the movie revolves entirely around him.
- The typical storyline is a man, James Bond, goes on an undercover mission to catch a certain villain and it normally takes up to the end of the movie for them to catch them.
- David Nivan, Barry Nelson, Timothy Dalton, Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore and Daniel Craig have all played the role of James Bond in the twenty-five different movies.
- I believe that their target audience is teenagers to young adults. I think this because i wouldn't link action movies to more elderly people or older people. I believe that the adventures and missions that James Bond goes on is for people more around a younger but not too younger age.

Do Now: What I Know About James Bond:
- 007
- Franchise
- Action Genre
- Played by multiple actors
- He is a spy
- "License To Kill"
- "Shaken Not Stirred"
- "The Names Bond, James Bond."
Context:
- No Time To Die is a James Bond film that was released in the UK on 30 September 2021, after a global premiere at the Royal Albert Hall on 28 September 2021. Starring Daniel Craig as 007, this is his fifth and final performance as the fictional M16 agent. The release was significantly delayed from April 2020, following a change in director and the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The film was produced by the British company EON (Everything or Nothing) Productions and distributed in UK cinemas by Universal Pictures.
- The film's budget was an estimated $250-301 million, making it the most expensive Bond film to date. So far it has grossed over $774 million worldwide at the box office.
- The poster was designed by Empire Designs, a British film promotion agency. The first teaser poster for the film was released on James Bond Day, 5th October 2019, as part of a global marketing campaign for the film. The typographical logo of the film title is in Futura Black.
Main Image:
- James Bond is the biggest picture there - Shows his importance in the film.
- The car on fire - Stereotypical action movie thing to happen.
- The man who looks like Freddy Mercury 😉 - The way he is turned back looking gives me the impression he is a villain (also Poppy said he is; Lauren was upset by that).
Colour Palette:
- Blue and Orange - They are contrasting colours which can connote a ongoing battle. Sort of like good vs evil. Since the blue is above the orange, it shows how good will conquer and will be on top of evil.
- Bond's suit is the same colour as the 007 which is expected as that is James Bond's code name, 007.
- Warm and Cold colours - Suggests there is some kind of fight.
- The blue can connote his calm, cool and collectiveness while doing his job.
- Everyone wearing blue.
Typography:
- Futura Black - This is a font that is not expected to be used often, which can link to Bond's choices in the movie, No Time To Die.
Block Capitals - Masculine, military stencil type fonts.
Mise-En-Scene:
- The woman is carrying a gun, which is not very stereotypical. It also shows her as powerful and possibly in a leader kind of role.
- The woman is not just there to look pretty.
- They have calmer faces which suggests they have got control.
- They are looking straight at us - Direct Address.
Genre:
- Action Film - This is evident through the guns and that the car is on fire.

Lo: To analyse the film poster set texts effectively
Intertextuality:
- The montage design, where separate images are laid over each other, references previous Bond films, providing a sense of familiarity, nostalgia and pleasure to fans who recognise the link. The 007 gun logo acts as an intertextual link between 'No Time To Die' and previous Bond films. It has become synonymous with Bond.
- It is significant that there is no intertextual reference to Ian Flemming on this poster - This is a departure from previous Bond films, signifying 'No Time To Die' is not based on one of his original books.
Narrative:
-Buildings are also shown, most noticeable a bar is seen, which connotes alcohol and danger from people being intoxicated.
- We can see somebody resembling the hero, which is James Bond. The villain, who is unknown to me, and the princess, who is blonde thing in the corner.
Stereotypes:
- Stereotypical Bond Girl - Wearing more revealing clothes, looks beautiful.
- Stereotypical Villain - Wearing a mask, holding a gun.
- Stereotypical Hero - Riding a motorbike.
Representations Of Gender:
- Men are represented in a very stereotypical way. - Riding motorbikes and carrying guns which are stereotypically more masculine things.
- Women are represented as strong and independent and a little stereotypical. - Holding a gun, looks ready to fight, but stereotypically dressed very nicely to do it.

Lo: To analyse the film poster set texts effectively.
Do Now:
- Strong, muscular - Probably abs
- They would be holding a weapon of some kind, a gun, or something else that looks cool and dangerous
- Particularly a much bigger build
- Very intelligent
- Often an expert in what they do as a profession
- No nonsense, they are often detached from life
Representation Context:
- James Bond is an action hero who, since the 1950s, has been constructed to embody historical masculine stereotypes such as strength, skill, independence, etc.
- The representation of women in the franchise has also historically been stereotypical: 'Bond Girls', who are the beautiful 'love interest' for Bond, are often insignificant to the narrative and ultimately disposable.
- The representations of gender in the Bond franchise has evolved over time, to an extent, in a bid to reflect the changing social context. It would be useful to consider the poster for The man with The Golden Gun (1974) here.
- Craig's Bond is not as sexist and overly stereotypical as the earlier incarnations of the character and reflects some contemporary notions of masculinity as his Bond is older, more thoughtful and shows signs of vulnerability. The poster, however, needing to communicate the genre and franchise quickly, only lightly reflects some of these character developments and continues to represent Bond as the familiar action hero.
- Hollywood's representation of race and ethnicity has shifted significantly over the decades. Mainstream audience expectations have changed because of numerous events and individuals. Two of the most significant events to prompt audiences to question what they are seeing in Hollywood was the
*OscarsSoWhite campaign in 2016, and the killing of black, American man, George Floyd, by the police force in 2020. The latter ignited a wave of US and global protests, which challenged long-established symbols of racism (e.g. flags, statues, buildings), calling on corporations and institutions to change.
- Aston Martin has a longstanding brand relationship with the James Bond franchise. In 'No Time To Die' several different models appear, but on the poster, Bond can be seen in a DB5. This model was the first ever Aston Martin used in the films, when Sean Connery drove it in Goldfinger in 1964.
- Dr Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) is pictured twice on the poster. A French psychiatrist and one of Bond's love interest, she would be recognisable to fans, as she also appeared in Spectre in 2015.
- James Bond has retired to Jamaica in 'No Time To Die', and his 007 title is reassigned to a new MI6 agent, Nomi (Lashana Lynch). This was widely reported before the launch of the film and the announcement of a black, female 007 led to a minority of racists trolling the actor Lashana Lynch online. On being cast, Lynch stated 'We [Black women] know how it feels to be underrepresented and we know how it feels to yearn for someone, anyone in the world to speak out truth for us when we feel like we don't have a voice. And I'm hoping that my career and my choice in roles and me just being me, authentically, is shining a light on our power.
- There are three gun props used in the poster. The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) states that 'ads for computer games, films, TV programs, should ensure that they do not promote violence or anti-social behaviour by depicting weapons in a threatening context or in a manner that could be seen to be glamorising violence'. Therefore it is significant that each of these weapons are relatively small or partially seen, and are not actively being used.
Representations Of Ethnicity:
- There is a diverse set of different ethnicities and their roles in the movie. For example, the black woman is in the role of a hero as the feminine version of 007. Where as, the mixed race man is the main villain of the storyline.
- The cast is mostly white which is very stereotypical for Hollywood and action movies in general. This shows how Hollywood movies have evolved to include people of different ethnicities.
Representations Of Age:
- Bond is an older version of his past actors. This shows us that it does not particularly matter the age that Bond is, probably not an elderly man though, he can still be the 007 we all know.
- All of the women are seen much younger than Bond, which would be quite stereotypical for a good 'damsel in distress' and action movie, as you wouldn't see someone like 89 years old, running around with a gun in hand.
Representations Of Sexuality:
We can see that there is not a clear representation of sexuality as it is never really explored throughout the movies (or so I think, I have never watched it).

Do Now:
- Man in a suit / tuxedo
- Wielding a weapon of some kind expertly
- Physically fit
- A lot younger than Daniel Craig
- Out-dated stereotypes
- Stereotypical Bond girls - Intimate - glamorous - not really important
Context:
- The Man with the Golden Gun is a James Bond film released on 19 December 1974, starring Roger Moore as 007. This was only Moore's second appearance as the fictional MI6 agent. roger Moore had become a household name after starring in the well-known TV series The Saint and playing Bond in the previous film, Live and Let Die.
- Based on a book of the same name, written by Ian Flemming, the film was produced by the British company Eon (Everything or Nothing) Productions and distributed by United Artists. The film was created with an estimated £7 million budget and grossed over £97 million at the world wide box office.
- To reflect the popularity of the Martial Arts film genre, with the rise of starts such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, there were several Kung Fu scenes and the film was filmed predominantly in Asia, having being shot in Hong Kong, Thailand and Macau.
- The artwork for the poster itself was produced by artist and illustrator Robert McGinnis.
- Prior to the 1990's illustrations were much more commonly used on film posters due to the limited technology that was available.
- The film was set in the middle of the 1973 energy crisis, when the oil producing Arab nations proclaimed an oil embargo causing an oil crisis which had both short and long-term effects across on politics and the economy across the globe. This is hinted at though the poster's iconography of the power plant in the lower left corner and the energy beam directed at Bond.
Why Have They Used A Montage Of Images?
- They have used a montage of images to show the audience what kind of things they should expect in the movie. For example, they should be aware that it includes the Bond girls and just women in general. We should also expect to see a golden gun (surprisingly) and also explosions.
Look at the dominant central image of Bond. What Are The Connotations Of The Following: The Gun, His Costume, Facial Expression & Direct address?
- Gun - The gun connoted danger which suits (get it 😉) his character of an undercover agent.
- Costume - Formal outfit connoting he is very formal when he is working and it is a very stereotypical look for James Bond. Also, the red tie can connote blood and suffering. It also shows he is used to his job and has gotten more comfortable in what he does.
- Facial Expression - He has a stern look upon his face which shows his seriousness and how he is not affected by the sight of people dying but also that he has no problem with the job he is doing.
- Direct Address - He is looking directly at the camera which can show how he is used to his job and how he has no problem seeing people die right in front of him.
What Are The Connotations Of The Golden Gun And The Man Holding It?
- The Golden Gun - It connotes wealth. It also shows how he is the main villain of the movie. The fact that the bullet has 007, it is establishing who the bullet is for and who it is meant to kill.
How Is The Text Used To Appeal To Different Types Of Audiences?
- The fact it says 'Ian Flemming' tells us that it is made to appeal to fans of the Ian Flemming books. Similarly, the Roger Moore inclusion means fans of him will also be interested in watching the movie.
What Enigma Codes Are Created?
- 'Why is the gun golden?'
- 'Does Bond win or lose?'
- 'What is with the massive explosion in the background?'
Which Of Propp's Character Types Can We See?
- Hero - Bond
- Villain - Man With Golden Gun
- Princess - Bond Girls
What Action/Adventure Genre Conventions Are Included?
- There is an explosion shown in the background shows the action side.
- The different locations show the adventure side.
- Male protagonist with a gun is another action convention, especially for their time (1974).
Exam Style Question: (A)
The gun that James Bond is holding connotes danger which suits/fits his character of an undercover agent. The fact that he is wearing a formal outfit connotes he is very comfortable when he is working and it is a very stereotypical look for James Bond. Also, the red tie can connote blood and suffering which is a constant theme in the Bond films. Similarly, he also shows he is used to his job and has gotten more comfortable in what he does over a long period of time. Bond is wearing a stern look upon his face which shows his seriousness and how he does not care about the people he kill because they are for good intentions and how he is not affected by the sight of people dying but also that he has no problem with the job he is doing. Bond is looking directly at the camera in the poster which can show how he has no problem seeing people die right in front of him. The Bond girls are extremely stereotypical as they are showing a tremendous amount of skin which was very stereotypical for Bond films. Also they are definitely underdressed as they are just wearing bikinis which shows how they could just be there to attract more male audiences.
I don't know what I am fully doing, so here is all three.
In the poster for 'The Man With The Golden Gun' we can clearly see that Bond is the main character throughout the story as he is the one who is placed in the centre of the poster. James Bond is currently wearing a very formal suit which gives us the impression that he is quite comfortable with the job that he does. However, the suit is mainly used as an indication of who the character is (The suit is James' signature look throughout all of the films). James Bond's is in a very stereotypical outfit for his character as it is the outfit that has been used in all of the films. The fact that he has got a red tie on could give us an idea that the movie will have something to do with blood, violence and maybe some love as that it was red stereotypically connotes. The fact that James Bond has got a serious facial expression upon his face tells us that he is isolated from society and doesn't feel much if not any remorse for those he has killed as a part of his job. James is using direct address to imply that he is looking at us who I believe we are meant to represent the villain as we are the ones that are holding the golden gun which implies how we are meant to be seen as against Bond. The fact that the gun is gold connotes the villains wealth and status within the movie premise. The bullet is engraved with 007 which tells us that the villain is going after one particular target, Bond, and that the bullet is meant for him only.
The explosion that is present in the poster gives us an idea that this is an action movie as an explosion is what you would stereotypically see in an action movie. The fact that there is an explosion can give us an insight into what can be expected within the movie. The multiple places and set locations that are on the poster gives us an idea that this could be an adventure and action movie mix. I believe this because an action movie would have a lot of different locations present and since there are many locations it can mean that during the movie, we can expect to go to multiple places for presumed battles and fights against the main villain. The fact that there a load of different locations is very stereotypical for Bond films as we have seen from the movie poster 'No Time To Die'. The three different images of women are known as the Bond girls. We know that the Bond girls were more objectified during the entirety of the much older films as it was stereotypical for men to be the more dominant gender. The three Bond girl's are there to represent James Bond's love interests and how they are there to add a bigger story to the main character even if it is just about his love life. The women on the poster are seen very underdressed which can tell us that they are there to grab the attention of a much wider male audience as it nearly shows nudity of the women which tells us that men were stereotypically seen as always needing to be about sex and stuff to do with it, this is why it would be able to grab their attention.
James Bond is placed in the centre of the poster to show how he is the main character of the film and how the majority of the film is going to be based on him and what he is doing during his mission as a spy. The man with the golden gun is placed off of the screen as a way to cause suspense among the audience and the viewers of the film as they will not know who it is or what they look like until it is revealed. The golden gun however is placed right in front of Bond to show how it is the villain who will be equipped with the gun, and not Bond as people could believe the man with the golden gun could be referring to James Bond if they are not familiar with the franchise. The Bond girls are placed around the centre but the image of them is not as big as the one of Bond. This could be trying to imply that even though the Bond girl's are important in the story, they are not as important as Bond which would be very stereotypical of the older Bond films. Some of the Bond girls have got their hands in the way of where the bullet is supposed to hit which gives me the impression that they will do anything to keep Bond safe, even if that means putting their own lived in jeopardy. All of the locations and action based things have all been placed in the background of the poster. This implies that we are not meant to focus on the specifically but they are still quite important parts of the film, just not as much as the other characters. Another reason in which they could have added the background images is to grab the viewers attention by making their advert look more appealing to them by using things that people look forward to in action movies. They also tell us what genre the movie is which is an action adventure one.

Film Posters
LO: To analyse a historical film poster effectively.
Do Now:
A black suit - Formal wear which can show that Bond is very skilled at what he does. It is also very stereotypical to see Bond in a suit of some sort as it is featured in all the films as his signature look.
The colour gold - This shows wealth and power. The man with the golden gun is presented as a wealthy man as the gun is literally gold but also the gold is showing his status in society.
A power plant - The power plant tells us that this can be an action adventure film as it includes a range of different locations which is a connotation of adventure films.
Representation Context:
- At the start of the 20th century, many film depictions of minority ethnic groups supported the dominant stereotypes of the time: to be pitied, to be laughed at, the exotic and/or dangerous.
- While society was progressing towards racial equality by the 1970s, some of these stereotypes were still in evidence mainstream films.
- In addition, it is interesting to consider this poster in the context of the move towards gender equality and increased women's rights in the 1960s and 70s.
Representations Of Gender:
- The male is centrally placed on the poster holding a gun and wearing a black suit with a red tie. The gun is a very stereotypical masculine thing which shows how gender matches the stereotypically normality of the gender stereotypes. Bond as the only male is represented as strong and powerful which is made clear by his facial expression and his physical build. His masculinity is shown as he is heterosexual which is made apparent by the way he is surrounded by women. the fact that all of the men are wielding a weapon of some sort tells us that they are very masculine and it is very stereotypical for gender and its representations.
- The three women are placed around James Bond which is not very stereotypical as women would be seen as not being a shield but should be the ones who need to be shielded by men. However, it is very stereotypical that they are very underdressed as it was very stereotypical to see this in older films. The women are not holding any weapons where as the men are all wielding one. This tells us that the women are on the poster for decoration; not to be focused on but are there to grab the attention of a wider male audience by catching their attention towards the underdressed women.
Stereotypes:
- The poster is very stereotypical for an action film. This is made apparent by the way that there is a gun present which can tell us that there will be violence which is normal for an action film. The fact that there is an explosion in the background also gives us an insight that this could be an action film as it is showing danger and conflict between different people. The car that is flying off of a bridge tells me that this is definitely going to be an action movie as it is made clear by the car chases which is very stereotypical for action films and the genre in general.
- However, there are also stereotypical adventure connotations present in the poster. We can see this as there are a few different locations on the poster which can tell us that we will be travelling quite a lot during the entirety of the movie. The fact tat there are many locations is very stereotypical for an adventure movie to include which leads me to believe that this will be an action adventure feature film.
- The stereotypes for spies is made clear on the poster. This is visual as the spy, James Bond, is wielding a gun expertly which shows that he is a very skilful spy and is good at what he does. The fact that he is also in a suit gives me the impression that he is a spy as formal wear is very common when it comes to the stereotypes of spies. The serious expression on his face also tells us that he is a spy as he looks distant from reality and society in general.

Production - How the film as a whole is made. E.g. editing, scenes, etc...
Distribution - Getting it out to an audience.
Marketing - How the marketers decide to promote their film and advertise it. making your target audience aware that it exists.
Exhibition - It is basically just the showing of the film.
The Film Industry is broken down into three main processes:
- Production
- Distribution and Marketing
- Circulation
- Some big film companies (conglomerates) will complete all three processes for a film. This is known as vertical integration.
Vertical Integration is very helpful as you as a company will be able to keep a lot of your profit because you do not have to share your profits with a lot of outside companies.
Production:
Production includes he financing, management and creation of a film.
Three stages of film production:
- Pre-production
- Locking of the script and storyboards
- Hiring actors and recruiting a crew
- Creating a production schedule
- Create sets, costumes, find locations
- Create the budget
- Create a vision for the film
- Secure all the things you need. E.g. space, humans, equipment.

What Do Producers Do?:
- Executive producers oversee the whole project. They check it has got the funding it needs.
- The title can be given to anyone who contributed to the overall film.
- Producers have to secure funding by convincing investors that the film will be successful.
- Secure the rights to a screenplay.

- It is a studio film with high production as it a well known franchise is also extremely famous leading me to believe that it is high production.
- The other production companies that are involved are Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Universal Pictures, B25 and Danjaq.
- The budget was estimated to be around £214,000,000 just for production.
- The countries was made in Italy, Jamaica, Norway, The Faroe Islands and London.

Do Now:
Production - The making of the film.
Distribution - Getting it out to your main target audience.
Marketing - How you advertise your movie and make it look appealing to your audience.
Exhibition - The viewing of the film.
Distribution:
- Distribution is the process of making copies of the film for cinema, VOD (video on demand), DVD and SDV (streaming and digital video) release and marketing & promotion.
- Sometimes producers will show their film at festivals in order to persuade distribution companies to take on their films.
- Sometimes a conglomerate (large company that owns smaller companies in other areas of the industry) will delegate the distribution to a smaller company that they own. This is called vertical integration.
- Distributers need to:
- Work out and stick to budgets for both creating copies of the film and all the aspects of marketing.
- Consider release dates and theatrical windows (time the film is in the cinema) very carefully.
1 - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) were the distributers of 'No Time To Die' in The United States, in 2021. Universal Pictures were the distributors who distributed it in Non-Us countries, also in 2021.
2 - Both Universal Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are part of a conglomerate.
3 - Oui. 🥖
4 - The release dates in the cinema was planned to be on April 2020 but was finally released on 30th September 2021.
Marketing & Promotion:
- Every institution, within every industry, has one important task above all others. TO MAKE A PROFIT!! The more money you make (Revenue), the more you can invest in other movies.
- A film's success is largely judged upon how much money it make at the BOX OFFICE A.K.A bums on seats in cinemas.
- Bond is an established franchise which has backers (financiers) lining up to either advertise a product within the film via product placement or finance part of the film.
- Films are very expensive to make. For instance, the budget for 'NTTD' was £214 million!!
- Hollywood and movie institutions are very cautious about spending too much on movies and roughly want two times what it cost to make the movie, back in profit.
- The advertising of a film is known as film promotion or film marketing and the people who are responsible for this are the distribution company, so-called because they distribute (give out) the films to the cinemas and distribute the promotional material around the country.
Ways Of Marketing:
- Advertise the actors present in the films, interviews and use their appearance. ( Celebrity Vehicles )
- Posters, billboards and advertisements.
- Memorable taglines help identify the movie.
- Social Media posts.
- Trailers and teaser give insight into enticing scenes that are included in the movie.
- The marketing budget, often for a movie, is a quarter or half of the production budget.
- Merchandise.
- Endorsement, collaborations and sponsorships.

Exhibition And Regulation
Lo: To explore exhibition & regulation in the film industry.
Do Now:
The delayed release of 'No Time To Die' was an issue for the team behind the movie because they had to keep the 'hype-train- up about the movie before people lost interest as it was delayed three times. The budget for the film was harder as the movie was delayed a numerous amount of times which meant that they had to keep paying to keep props and to get more posters and adverts for the later audience to see. The props they were using eventually became more out of date as more of the products were made but they were improved and so the things they were previously using suddenly had less 'hype'.
Exhibition:
- We watch films on streaming services (Disney Plus, Netflix, etc...). However, we can still watch movies at a cinema. We can make these decisions if we are more excited for a certain movie than we are for a movie we have seen before and do not want to waste money to see it in the cinema again.
- Exhibition (circulation) is the process of exhibiting the film across a range of different media platforms.
- Historically this used to only include cinema release, but as digital technology evolves so does the way in which we watch films.
Exhibition takes place in the following order:
1 - Cinema release
2 - DVD release, Pay per view (PPV) / Video on demand (VOD) - (recently DVD and PPV / VOD have been released simultaneously as audiences are becoming more demanding and turning more to digital download).
3 - 'Free To Air' television (available on standard TV channels for free to the viewer).
In the last few years there has been a change in the way that we as the audience consume (watch) films. The rise of Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming sites has made film more easily accessible to viewers. Regulation:
- Film and video releases in Britain are amongst the most tightly regulated in the Western World.
- age restrictions are placed on all commercially released films by the BBFC and some are even expected to make cuts or alter the film in some way to conform to the guidelines.
When classifying films, the BBFC consider:
- Context
- Themes
- Tone and impact
- Depiction of discrimination
- Depiction of drug use
- Depiction of sex and nudity
- Use of language
- Depiction of threat and violence
- Depiction of imitable behaviour
What age classification was NTTD given for theatrical release (in the cinema) and for video release (DVD)? Why?
Theatrical release - 12A because it includes moderate violence and infrequent strong language.
Video release - 12 because it includes moderate violence and infrequent strong language.
What are the financial positives of NTTD being given this age classification?
It can get the attention of a younger audience which will bring more money because they would want to watch the film. They also get a much wider audience and you would not want to put off the adult audience as they would not want to watch a film that is most likely not going to be very graphic as it would be able to be shown to children.

Uses And Gratifications Theory
Uses & Gratification is a theory from two men called Blumler & Katz that audiences take an action role in using the media.
What people do with the media.
NOT what the media does with people.
The theory states that an audience will use a media form for either one of four reasons:
P - Personal Identity
I - Information
E - Entertainment
S - Social Interaction
Personal Identity: E.g. Any social media site or app (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat)
- Media products allows audiences to find role models and other people with similar values.
- Use of media to reinforce personal values by coming closer to similar and desired people / products.
Information: E.g. News websites or their social media accounts.
- Any information can be learned through different forms of media.
- Media allows the audience to gain an insight into other peoples lives.
- The media keeps the audience informed with current events.
- People can acquire information, knowledge and understand through media products.
Entertainment: E.g. Video games, movies, TV series.
- Use of media to escape the humdrum of their boring everyday lives.
- Access media forms to forget about worries and troubles for a while (escapism).
- To give a sense of happiness and release from the daily 'grind' (work, school, obligations).
Social Interaction: E.g. Communicating with friends (WhatsApp, Messenger).
- The ability of media products to produce a topic of conversation between other people.
- Media products allows the audiences to break down barriers of time / distance to communicate with others.
- Media allows the audience to gain an insight into other peoples lives.
Putting It Together:
Category of gratification - Entertainment (Film/Tv)
Lots of people watch films specifically for entertainment as it can give them a short period of release from their troubles and obligations by allowing themselves to become indulged in a movie. For example, people watch horror movies mainly for the feeling of suspense and being scared; they find it fun. People may watch Sci-Fi movies to give them the impression that if the world was like it is in the movie, how different it would be; it gives them a temporary escape.
Band 5 (Maybe, je ne sais pas).
How would NTTD contribute to personal identity?
You can take ideas from James Bond's lifestyle (to a certain extent). For example, you may choose to be brave like him and not be so scared of the dangers outside because there is a low chance you will encounter it.
What sort of information would it give?
It shows you how to do certain things, in style. It can give us information about what life is like for a spy and how working in MI6 can be a thrilling experience. It could also give us information about the different characters within the movie and the new they wanted to explore.
How would they be entertained?
Many people like action films and like to follow the story of Monsieur Bond. The thrilling car chases and fight scenes (action packed sequences) can entice an audience who particularly like action based movies. The fact they got a chance to escape into a fictional spy world for a few hours can make people feel better as they do not worry about their own troubles and problems.
How would the film promote social interaction?
Watching this kind of movie can give you a great conversation to have with another person who is a part of your human species. It is a part of a franchise which means that fans can say their opinions about the movie and what they think about the new turn on a female Bond character.

Uses & Gratifications On The NTTD Website:
Personal Identity - The trailers can give a temporary release from the worries and troubles of the mere meaning of our existence as the human species.
Information - Within the homepage of the website, we can see a paragraph labelled 'Info' which tells us all of the things about the storyline for NTTD.
Entertainment - Trailers and poster are shown for the audience to enjoy.
Social Interaction - The website shows trailers and pictures which gives people to talk about over conversations to say if they like the idea they got from the trailer and movies to say their opinions.
How the audience would find 'Entertainment' from the trailer:
The short shots create a nice suspense with the quiet music progressively getting louder, resulting in a big part of the movie like a gun sequence or the chase sequences. The music going quiet gives the audience a wave of excitement because it shows that the man (the villain) could be an important and main character that will be shown throughout the movie.
Entertainment:
From the trailer, we can see that the short shots can excite the audience with suspense as it progressively gets louder, resulting in loud music along with a scene of a gun fight or chase sequence. The music goes quiet before a big scene to give the audience a moment of suspense before revealing the main villain which can be deciphered through the Propp system.

Film Industry Roundup
LO: To consolidate our knowledge of the film industry and to apply it to exam style questions.
Do Now:
- I would expect to see information about the movie like some of things that are to be expected within the movie like a thrilling car chase and gun sequences in NTTD but not too much information about who or why as that would give away some of the movie.
- I would expect to see a trailer for the film showing the different scenes that will be enticing to the audience that will excite the person watching. This will want to make me see the film as the thrills of the movie would engage me in the story line and excite me for those films.
- I would also expect to see the different actors that are present and the role they play within the movie which can get my attention because if I liked a certain actor that was in the film it would make me want to watch it more to see that actor but to also know what new thing could be added by the actors brining in their own different perceptions to the characters they play.
- Links to websites where I can watch the movie like Disney+ or Netflix but also to different social media platforms which opens up my options of things to read and enjoy for the movie.
How the sets and costumes were designed:
- All of their materials had to be brought over by a boat.
- They had to build the set and took inspiration from real buildings in Cuba that would best fit the scene and was compatible with the fight sequences.
- The costumes for the club in Cuba were made to fit where they were and who was wearing them which was mainly people who worked there or dancers.
- Did not use to many different things within the sets to ensure that they were simple and would not too long to set up and they would not have to use so much money on just one set.
- They used most of the original things like the desk in the office because it helps normalise it as a key location within the films but every designer puts their own spin on something. For example, the painting may change because a different designer thought it would better fit the set and scene.

Homework
3d) Explain how films use technologies to reach audiences and promote the film. Refer to NTTD to support your points. [12]
4c) Explain why users visit the NTTD / 007 website. Refer to the Uses and Gratifications theory in your answer. [12]
People may use the NTTD / 007 website as Bond may be something that means a lot to them. This can be if they have been around since the first Bond movie came out and they remember watching it and now it gives them a sense of relaxation and fond memories for them. It could also be that they like a particularly good actor from the film, take Daniel Craig for example, people who are a huge fan of Daniel Craig and all of his different types of work would definitely enjoy seeing him in an action based film where he is most of the time in a suit but it shows off how strong looking he is. However, if people are a fan of Lashana Lynch and her movies in Matilda would definitely enjoy seeing her within a different genre of film and people who are a fan of that actor can see a new kind of acting style from that actor which they have not seen yet. People who are a huge fan of just action based movies may even check out the website knowing it is an action as their love for action movies is part of who they are and the website can entice to even watch 'No Time To Die' and possibly try a new franchise than what they may already be used to watching.
People may also use the NTTD / 007 to gain a good knowledge or basis idea of what they believe the movie will be about. They can acquire this kind of insight by looking at the trailers and teasers which help to inform them of the sort of actors would be present within the film and what kind of role they play like a hero, villain, etc. Using images and clips of the upcoming movie can help to give people a good idea into what kind of set locations will be present within the movie which can give people the want to go to those places and be where films of the franchise are set. Within the info category of the website, we can clearly see that the premise of the movie is explained quite thoroughly and gives us a good idea of what the movie has in store for us as the audience. The posters give us a set date that the movie was out in theatres and the website would also include all of the different streaming services that the viewer can watch 'No Time To Die' on.
A lot of the people who use the website would use the website just for the pure purpose of entertainment. This kind of entertainment can be through the trailers as it allows the viewer to have a temporary release from their daily struggles and problems of life. The entertainment can help them to visualise them in a world where they are an agent just like Bond and they have to try their best to complete their own set mission. The trailers can also give them an idea of what the premise may be and with that knowledge they could try to think of what they would do if they were in the position of Bond and what they may do differently to him. The posters can also give the audience a sense of release from everyday tasks and responsibilities as they can imagine themselves in that kind of suit just like Bond and pose in the same kind of stance as James Bond to give themself a sense of not having to be them for a bit and can relax and live in the kind of world where they are the great spy James Bond.
People who look at the website for NTTD or 007 are able to talk to people just like them who are also a fan of 'No Time To Die' and the James Bond franchise as a whole. This is made possible as when a new movie is going to be released, posters are set out before hand which gives people who are a major fan of Bond something to talk to other Bond lovers about. As well as the posters, teasers are also released before the movie is which can allow people to say what they think the main villain or premise of the movie may be about. When the trailers get released for the upcoming film, it will usually include some important scenes like the villain and hero in action. Similarly, it is very stereotypical for a Bond trailer and film to involve a gun fight or chase sequence in some way if that is a foot chase or a car chase. With the trailer including all of these different elements, we can assume that fans of the franchise even if it for a bit or since the beginning will be able to enjoy a conversation of their views on the trailer and what they believe the movie could be about but also hearing other people talk about their opinion of the trailer and seeing if they have got any different points. This can encourage people to talk to others and can also help to give people something to talk about if they know someone is a massive Bond fan.
